The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) ended the week in the red, falling 0.86% on Friday to close at 7,346.8 points. That leaves it down 1.17% week-on-week.

Today's tumble followed an equally disappointing overnight session on Wall Street. Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) slumped 1.3%, the S&P 500 Index (SP: .INX) slipped 1.4%, and the Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) dumped 1.8%.

Back home, it was a bloodbath across much of the market today.

Tech was hit hardest, with the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) tumbling 2.3%. Its worst performer was the Block Inc (ASX: SQ2) share price, which fell 7.8%.

The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) also suffered, falling 1.8% as coal producers spent a second day deep in the red after tumbling amid news of the NSW government's coal price cap policy yesterday.

There was a bright spot on the ASX 200 today, however. That was the S&P/ASX Utilities Index (ASX: XUJ), which rose 1%, driven by the Origin Energy Ltd (ASX: ORG) share price's 1.7% gain.

So, with all that in mind, which ASX 200 shares outperformed all others today? Let's take a look.

The biggest gainer on the ASX 200 today was the QBE Insurance Group Ltd (ASX: QBE) share price. It rose 7.4% to close at $14.39.

The insurer posted its full-year earnings this morning, detailing a 2.7% jump in net profit after tax (NPAT) and a 30-cent final dividend up 57% year-on-year.

These shares made today's biggest gains:

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) ended the week just the way it started it – in the red. The index closed Friday's session 0.76% lower at 7,433.7 points, marking a 1.65% week-on-week fall.

It came as the Reserve Bank of Australia issued its latest Statement on Monetary Policy. The central bank "expects that further increases in interest rates will be needed" in its battle against inflation.

Of course, that was seemingly bad news for the rate-sensitive S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ), which dropped 2% today.

The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) also struggled, falling 1.7% after energy commodities slumped overnight.

One sector rose above the chaos, however. The S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Staples Index (ASX: XSJ) lifted 0.9%, driven by the United Malt Group Ltd (ASX: UMG) share price. It gained 4.8% amid the company's annual general meeting.

But it was outperformed by one of its ASX 200 peers. Let's take a look at the stock posting the index's biggest gain on Friday.

Top 10 ASX 200 shares countdown

The Imugene Limited (ASX: IMU) share price took out the ASX 200's top spot today, rising 7.4% to close at 14.5 cents.

Its gains came on the announcement of a new United States patent.

In afternoon trade, the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) is on course to end the week on a disappointing note. At the time of writing, the benchmark index is down 0.7% to 7,436.9 points.

Four ASX shares that aren't letting that stop them from climbing today are listed below. Here's why they are pushing higher:

Appen Ltd (ASX: APX)

The Appen share price is up 12% to $3.31. Investors have been buying this artificial intelligence data services company's shares despite there being no news out of the company. However, investors appear to be betting that significant investment in artificial intelligence from tech giants in response to the emergence of ChatGPT could underpin increased demand for Appen's services.

Endeavour Group Ltd (ASX: EDV)

The Endeavour share price is up 2% to $6.79. This may have been driven by a broker note out of UBS. Its analysts have taken their sell rating off the drinks company's shares and upgraded them to a neutral rating with a $6.75 price target. UBS believes regulatory risks are now adequately priced in.

Imugene Limited (ASX: IMU)

The Imugene share price is up 11% to 15 cents. This follows news that the biotech company has been granted a patent in the United States. The patent relates to the company's B-cell activating immunotherapy PD1-Vaxx. It is currently in development for the treatment non-small cell lung cancer.

Treasury Wine Estates Ltd (ASX: TWE)

The Treasury Wine share price is up 2% to $14.41. A broker note out of Morgan Stanley appears to have given this wine giant's shares a boost. Its analysts highlight China's reopening and the easing of trade tensions as potential positives for Treasury Wine. In respect to the latter, Chinese officials have suggested that they could revisit at tariffs imposed on Australian wines.

The share price of S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) biopharmaceutical developer Imugene Limited (ASX: IMU) is soaring on Friday after the company announced a new United States patent.

The patent relates to its B-cell activating immunotherapy PD1-Vaxx. It's currently in development for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Right now, the Imugene share price is trading at 14.2 cents, marking a 5.19% gain.

Let's take a closer look at the news driving the ASX 200 healthcare share higher today.

ASX 200 healthcare share leaps on patent news

It's shaping up to be a good day for the Imugene share price after the company announced another patent.

This time, it has patented the PD1-Vaxx and its method of treatment in cancer to 2038.

The company is finalising preparations for a clinical trial in which PD1-Vaxx will be combined with atezolizumab – an immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) targeting PD-L1 – in patients with NSCLC.

The trial's objectives are to determine the safety, efficacy, and optimal dose of PD1-Vaxx in combination with atezolizumab as either first-line therapy in ICI treatment-naïve NSCLC patients or ICI pre-treated patients. The study will be conducted in both the United States and Australia.

Commenting on the news driving the Imugene share price higher today, managing director and CEO Leslie Chong said:

It's vital to our business that we continue locking in intellectual property protection across the portfolio of assets, and I am proud to continue to strengthen our intellectual property.

With the United States being the largest healthcare market in the world, this is a particularly important patent to protect our PD1-Vaxx technology as we continue its development.

Imugene share price snapshot

Sadly, the Imugene share price has been underperforming in recent months.

The stock has lifted just 1% since the start of 2023, compared to the ASX 200's 7% gain.

Looking further back, the company's share price has tumbled 57% over the last 12 months. Meanwhile, the index has gained 2%.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) shot to a nine-month high of 7,537.7 points today. However, by the time the market closed it was sitting at 7,501.7 points – marking a 0.33% gain.

And leading the way was the S&P/ASX 200 Real Estate Index (ASX: XRE). It rose 1.4% today.

Meanwhile, the S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) lifted 0.7% as the iron ore price hit a seven-month high of US$123.37 a tonne.

The S&P/ASX 200 Health Care Index (ASX: XHJ) also gained, jumping 0.6%.

But the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) didn't get in on the upwards swing. It slipped 1.2% despite a mixed night for oil prices. Brent crude oil fell 0.5% overnight to US$84.49 a barrel while US Nymex crude oil rose 1.2% to US$78.87 a barrel.

So, with all that in mind, take a stab at which ASX 200 share might have outperformed all others on Wednesday.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) soared to its highest point in nine months on Thursday, peaking at 7439.7 points before slipping slightly to close 0.57% higher at 7,435.3 points.

That was despite a poor session on Wall Street overnight. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) fell 1.8% on Wednesday overseas, while the S&P 500 Index (SP: .INX) dropped 1.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) slipped 1.2%.

The S&P/ASX 200 Health Care Index (ASX: XHJ) also outperformed, gaining 0.9%.

Meanwhile, an 4.7% gain from Viva Energy Group Ltd (ASX: VEA) wasn't enough to stop the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) from falling 0.7% alongside oil prices. The black liquid's value slipped around 1% overnight.

So, with all that covered, let's take a look at the 10 shares outperforming all others on Thursday.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) kicked off the week strong, leaping 0.82% on Monday to close at 7,388.2 points.

That was despite a lacklustre performance from mining shares. The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) lifted just 0.2% today as lithium stocks and iron ore giants weighed on the sector.

The S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ), on the other hand, led the market's gains, lifting 1.8%.

It was also a good day to be invested in ASX 200 bank shares. Shares in the big four banks rose between 0.7% and 1.6% on Monday after many of their New York-listed peers leapt on quarterly earnings on Friday.

Finally, the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) rose 1.5% on Monday following a strong Friday session for oil prices.

So, with all that in mind, let's take a look at the 10 shares taking out today's top spots on the ASX 200.

There was likely a spring in the step of S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) investors today as the market jumped higher. The index closed Thursday's session 1.18% higher at 7,280.4 points.

It followed a joyous session on Wall Street overnight. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) lifted 0.8% on Wednesday while the S&P 500 Index (SP: .INX) rose 1.3% and the Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) gained 1.8%.

Back home, the banks led the way, with the S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ) flying 1.5% higher.

The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) also posted a 1.2% gain after a strong night for oil prices and bullish comments from market experts.

Bringing up the ASX 200's rear on Thursday was the S&P/ASX 200 Utilities Index (ASX: XUJ). It rose just 0.2%.

So, with all that in mind, let's take a look at the shares that posted the ASX 200's biggest gains today.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) wobbled in and out of the green this afternoon before ultimately closing the day higher. The index was up 0.06% at 7,063.6 points at the end of Thursday's session.

While many miners came in among the day's top gainers, the S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Index (ASX: XDJ) outperformed all other sectors, rising 0.6%.

Travel stocks led the way on the sector. Shares in Corporation Travel Management Ltd (ASX: CTD), Flight Centre Travel Group Ltd (ASX: FLT), and Webjet Limited (ASX: WEB) gained 3.7%, 3.4%, and 2.7% respectively.

Meanwhile, the S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) rose 0.4% with gold miners taking out the top spots after the yellow metal's value cracked US$1,850 an ounce overnight.

Today wasn't all green, however. The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) plunged 1.3%, leaving it 3.9% lower than it was at the end of 2022.

So, with all that in mind, let's take a look at Thursday's 10 top-performing ASX 200 shares.

Its surge came amid news of the maiden shipment from the company's Finniss Lithium Project.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) recovered from Tuesday's fall today, lifting 1.63% to close at 7,059.2 points.

Its gains came despite a rough night's trade on Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) traded flat on Tuesday overseas while the S&P 500 Index (SP: .INX) fell 0.4% and the Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) dropped 0.8%.

Interestingly, the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) led the way today. It rose 2.9%.

And the tech sector wasn't alone in posting a whopper gain. The S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ) also lifted 2.2% while the S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Index (ASX: XDJ) jumped 2.1%.

It wasn't such a good day for energy stocks, however. The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) fell 1.3% after the price of oil slid 4% amid concerns about Chinese demand and a stronger US dollar, Reuters reports.

So, with all that in mind, let's take a look at today's top-performing ASX 200 shares.

Its share price rose 11.4% to close at 83 cents despite no news having been released by the tech favourite.

Ending the year on a high note, the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) rallied on the last trading day of 2022. The benchmark index climbed 0.26% to 7,038.7 points, following in the footsteps of the US stock market last night.

Nearly all sectors of the Australian share market were walking with a spring in their step on Friday. All except for one, the real estate sector — slipping slightly lower with broad weakness among popular property names.

The most significant move inside the top 200 came from Link Administration Holdings Ltd (ASX: LNK), taking a woeful 40% tumble. Although, the move was due to the company's shares trading ex-distribution of its holding in the online conveyancing platform PEXA Group Ltd (ASX: PXA).

Top 10 ASX 200 shares countdown

It's been an underwhelming year for the BrainChip Holdings Ltd (ASX: BRN) share price, but that didn't stop the chip developer's shares from taking off today. Despite the rather sizeable 12% move, there didn't appear to be any information to explain the move.

Meanwhile, it was a sea of green for ASX lithium shares on Friday. Several lithium names made it into the top 10 following news in the United States that leased electric vehicles will also qualify for the US$7,500 in tax credits.

ASX-listed company

Share price

Price change

BrainChip Holdings Ltd (ASX: BRN)

$0.745

12.03%

Imugene Limited (ASX: IMU)

$0.145

7.41%

Lake Resources N.L. (ASX: LKE)

$0.80

5.96%

Costa Group Holdings Ltd (ASX: CGC)

$2.75

5.77%

Sayona Mining Ltd (ASX: SYA)

$0.19

5.56%

Core Lithium Ltd (ASX: CXO)

$1.025

5.13%

Liontown Resources Ltd (ASX: LTR)

$1.32

4.35%

Block Inc CDI (ASX: SQ2)

$91.94

4.12%

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

$1.47

3.89%

Telix Pharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX: TLX)

$7.27

3.71%

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) traded in the green on Tuesday, recovering some of yesterday's slump. At the end of today's session, the index was 0.31% higher at 7,203.3 points

Tech shares were among the market's best performers today, with the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) lifting 1.7%.

It followed a decent night on Wall Street that saw the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) posting a 1.3% gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) meanwhile, rose 1.6% and the S&P 500 Index (SP: .INX) lifted 1.4%.

Banks also posted a good day's trade today, with the S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ) gaining 1.4%.

However, the market's other giants, miners, struggled. The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) fell 1.4% on the back of lower commodity prices.

Gold futures prices fell 1% to US$1,792.30 an ounce overnight while iron ore futures slipped 0.9% to US$109.47 a tonne.

All in all, all but one of the ASX 200's 11 sectors closed higher. But which stock outperformed all its peers to post today's biggest gain? Keep reading to find out.

The index finished up at 7,175.5 points, down 0.75% for the day. Since Monday, the ASX 200 has already lost a nasty 2%.

These losses were led by ASX 200 energy shares. The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) ended up falling by a nasty 2.42%, led by Woodside Energy Group Ltd (ASX: WDS) falling by almost 3.7%. Leading coal miner Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX: WHC) was down by 2.59%.

This was induced by sharp falls in energy and commodity prices. Oil is now back under US$80 a barrel, with WTI crude down 3.48% to US$74.25 a barrel on the latest numbers.

Meanwhile, the best-performing sector today was utilities, with the S&P/ASX 200 Utilities Index (ASX: XUJ) rising 0.97%. In total, only three of the ASX 200's 11 sectors were in the green today.

Countdown to the top 10 ASX 200 shares on Thursday

This came after the miner indicated that it has uncovered some new copper and nickel reserves at its Julimar Project in Western Australia.

At the time of writing, the benchmark index is up 0.5% to 7,340.4 points.

Four ASX shares that are climbing more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are pushing higher:

Imugene Limited (ASX: IMU)

The Imugene share price up 1.5% to 18.75 cents. This follows the release of two updates this morning. One revealed that the first patient has been dosed with the novel cancer-killing virus Vaxinia as part of the intravenous cohort 2 trial.

Rio Tinto Ltd (ASX: RIO)

The Rio Tinto share price is up 4% to $116.20. Investors have been buying Rio Tinto and other ASX iron ore miners after the price of the steel making ingredient charged higher. The spot iron ore price is now nearing US$110 a tonne. This is up from approximately US$80 a tonne at the start of November. The potential reopening of China appears to be behind this rise.

Santos Ltd (ASX: STO)

The Santos share price is up 3% to $7.35. This appears to have been driven by a rise in oil prices during Asian trade. Prices have climbed after OPEC announced that it will push ahead with its plans to cut production by 2 million barrels per day in 2023. China easing COVID restrictions also appears to be supporting prices.

Warrego Energy Ltd (ASX: WGO)

The Warrego Energy share price is up 12% to 31.7 cents. This follows news that Hancock Energy has increased its takeover bid from $0.23 per Warrego share to $0.28 per Warrego share. All other terms of its offer remain unchanged. Beach Energy Ltd (ASX: BPT) has been given five business days to match the revised Hancock Energy takeover offer.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) spent the afternoon in the green on Tuesday. The index closed today's session 0.33% higher at 7,253.3 points.

That was despite an early downturn that saw it dump as much as 0.39% to an intraday low of 7,200.9 points.

The volatility came as the market awaited a briefing from Chinese officials regarding the country's current COVID-19 outbreak, CNBC reports.

Mining stocks were among the top performers today. The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) lifted 1.7%.

Joining it in the green was the S&P/ASX 200 Health Care Index (ASX: XHJ). It lifted 0.6% amid earnings from one of its larger constituents.

It wasn't such a bright day for energy shares, however. The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) traded relatively flat, lifting just 0.03%, despite a mixed performance from oil prices overnight.

The Brent crude oil price fell 0.5% to trade at US$83.19 a barrel overnight, while the US Nymex crude oil price lifted 1.3% to US$77.24 a barrel.

All in all, four of the ASX 200's 11 sectors closed higher today. But which stock took today's crown? Keep reading to find out.

Top 10 ASX 200 shares countdown

Of course, today's top performer was also the healthcare stock driving its home sector higher on Tuesday. The Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Corp Ltd (ASX: FPH) share price soared 10% today despite the company posting a 57% drop in after-tax profits.

The Imugene Limited (ASX: IMU) share price has had a tough run lately.

Imugene shares have dropped nearly 12% since market close on 15 November. The company's share price was flat today and closed the day trading at 19 cents.

Let's take a look at what is happening at Imugene.

What's going on?

Imugene is a biotechnology company working on immunotherapies to treat cancer.

The Imugene share price descended nearly 10% last Wednesday,1 6 November. The S&P/ASX 200 Health Care Index (ASX: XHJ) also lost 1% on this day.

The dramatic fall on Wednesday followed the company's share price soaring 5% on Tuesday, 15 November.

Imugene provided an investor presentation to the market on this day. The company highlighted it had $163.8 million in cash as of 30 September. The company has five unique assets, three platform technologies, 2 supply agreements, three scientific collaborations and 10 clinical studies.

On 17 November, Imugene held its AGM. The company's share price was flat on this day. All resolutions at the meeting were carried but the company noted more than 25% voted against the 2022 remuneration report.

Highlights in 2022 included positive overall survival results in phase two of the HER-Vaxx trial, a clinical trial agreement with Roche to investigate the PD-1-Vaxx in combination with Tecentriq, and cohort three being cleared in the phase one study of CHECKvacc for treatment of patients with triple negative breast cancer. In the Vaxinia trial, the first patients were dosed and cleared in IV cohort 1 and IT cohort 2.

On 11 November, Imugene advised it has escalated the dose in the phase one clinical trial of Vaxinia. This treatment has been shown to shrink cancer tumours in animal models.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) slipped on Tuesday as lithium stocks weighed on the market. The index closed 0.07% lower at 7,141.6 points.

It followed a weak session on Wall Street overnight in which the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) fell 0.6%, the S&P 500 Index (SP: .INX) slumped 0.9%, and the Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) dropped 1.1%.

Today's worst-performing ASX 200 sector was the S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ), recording a 1% fall. Its worst performers were, in turn, lithium shares. Many stocks involved with the battery-making material tumbled following their broadly brilliant day on Monday.

The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) also had a challenging day, falling 0.9% amid lower oil prices. The Brent crude oil price fell 3% to US$93.14 a barrel overnight while the US Nymex crude oil price dropped 3.5% to trade at US$85.87 a barrel.

But it wasn't all dire on the market. The S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) posted a 1.7% gain while the S&P/ASX 200 Health Care Index (ASX: XHJ) lifted 1.4%.

All in all, seven of the ASX 200's sectors closed higher on Tuesday. But which share came out on top? Keep reading to find out.

Interestingly, the only word released by the biopharmaceutical company today was a non-price-sensitive investor presentation.
The Aussie bourse was driven higher by the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) today. The sector gained 3.3% despite tumbling oil prices.
