At the time of writing, the benchmark index is up 0.3% to 7,308.4 points.

Four ASX shares that have failed to follow the market higher today are listed below. Here's why they are dropping:

Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV)

The Clinuvel share price is down 3% to $23.33. This is despite the release of the pharmaceutical company's half-year results, which revealed explosive earnings growth. Clinuvel reported a 19% increase in revenue and a 94% jump in profit after tax. This was driven by growth in prescriptions and expert centres administering the Scenesse therapy.

CogState Limited (ASX: CGS)

The CogState share price is down 25% to $1.22. This neuroscience technology company advised that it expects to report a 12% decline in first-half clinical trials revenue to $17.1 million and breakeven profit before tax. This soft performance has been driven by a slower than expected enrolment of patients by pharmaceutical companies in a small number of their large Alzheimer's trials.

Omni Bridgeway Ltd (ASX: OBL)

The Omni Bridgeway share price has crashed 18% to $2.97. Investors have been selling this class action funder's shares since the release of its half-year results on Thursday. As well as a poor result, which saw Omni Bridgeway report a net loss after tax of $30.1 million, the company revealed that its long-serving CEO would be retiring from the role later this year.

Westgold Resources Ltd (ASX: WGX)

The Westgold share price is down 5% to 91 cents. This morning, this gold miner released its half-year results and reported a 1% increase in revenue to $315 million but an $11.1 million loss after tax. This is down from a $19.9 million profit a year earlier.

This year has brought good tidings to the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) and these five shares are among those making the most of it.

They've each jumped as much as 5.8% to reach their highest point in more than a year on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the iconic index is up 0.44% at 7,490.4 points at the time of writing. That's 7.8% higher than it was at the start of the year.

Let's take a closer look at what's sent these market giants soaring today.

These ASX 200 shares are roaring to long-forgotten heights

The first ASX 200 share posting a new 52-week high is Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV). Stock in the biopharmaceutical developer lifted 2.6% to reach $27.42 earlier today – the highest it's been since 2021.

It follows yesterday's news of the company's analogue adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). It's aiming to submit a regulatory drug master file for the product in the second half of this year – an "aggressive goal" according to chief scientific officer Dr Dennis Wright.

The Mineral Resources Ltd (ASX: MIN) share price is also rocketing on Tuesday, hitting a new record high amid a broker upgrade. The stock peaked at $96.78 earlier today – a 5.8% gain.

UBS has reportedly upped its expectations for lithium. It now tips demand to outweigh supply in the near and medium term, the Australian Financial Review reports.

In response, it's slapped a buy rating on shares in the ASX 200 materials giant.

Meanwhile, the TechnologyOne Ltd (ASX: TNE) share price is in the green for a third consecutive day. It follows the release of the company's non-price-sensitive annual report on Thursday evening.

The tech stock reached an all-time high of $14.705 today – marking a 2% rise.

ASX 200 travel giant Webjet Limited (ASX: WEB), on the other hand, popped then dropped today, hitting a post-pandemic high of $6.86 this morning before plunging into the red.

Today's peak saw the stock 1.2% higher than its previous close and around 170% higher than its 2020 low.

Finally, shares in ASX 200 health imaging technology provider Pro Medicus Limited (ASX: PME) have continued to inch towards their all-time high today.

The stock has posted a new 52-week high for a third consecutive session. This time it peaked at $64.77 – a 2.4% jump.

Its gains might be a belated reaction to Friday's announcement, detailing a $25 million contract with the University of Washington.

The All Ordinaries Index (ASX: XAO) is back in the green on Wednesday, driven higher by four shares leaping to new 52-week highs.

Right now, the All Ordinaries Index is up 0.12%, trading at 7,606.9 points.

Let's take a closer look at four shares trading at their highest point in more than a year today.

4 ASX All Ordinaries shares soaring to 52-week highs

The Stanmore Resources Ltd (ASX: SMR) share price is on the up and up today, gaining 5% at its intraday peak to hit an all-time record high of $3.55.

The coal miner has been on a major roll over the last 12 months, gaining more than 230% in that time.

Joining the coal miner in the green is All Ordinaries biopharmaceutical share Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV). It soared 3% earlier today to reach $26.65 – the highest it's been since this time last year.

The last 12 months have been a rollercoaster for the healthcare stock. Six months before it soared to today's high, the stock hit a low of $13.16.

In afternoon trade, the benchmark index is up 0.85% to 6,842.8 points.

Four ASX shares that are climbing more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are rising:

Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV)

The Clinuvel share price is up 5% to $19.62. This follows the release of the biopharmaceutical company's quarterly update. Clinuvel recorded its highest quarterly results from customer receipts since the commencement of commercial operations in Europe in June 2016 and United States in April 2020. The company's receipts from customers for the quarter were $25.152 million, with net operating expenditures of $8.270 million and net operating cashflow totalling $17.338 million.

Nitro Software Ltd (ASX: NTO)

The Nitro share price is up 18% to $2.05. Investors have been buying this document productivity software company's shares after it received another takeover offer. Canadian graphics software company Alludo has offered $2.00 per share, which is 11% higher than Potentia Capital's offer of $1.80 per share. Given that the Nitro share price is trading above the offer price, investors appear to believe a bidding war could ensue.

Premier Investments Limited (ASX: PMV)

The Premier Investments share price is up 5% to $24.97. This has been driven by the release of a trading update from the retail conglomerate after the market close on Friday. That update reveals that global sales for the first 12 weeks of FY 2023 are up 42.8% on the prior corresponding period. This is also a 21.7% increase on the same 'pre-COVID' period during FY 2020.

Pushpay Holdings Ltd (ASX: PPH)

The Pushpay share price is up 8% to $1.14. This follows news that the donation platform provider has accepted a NZ$1.34 (A$1.21) per share takeover offer from the Sixth Street and BGH Capital Consortium. This represents a 14.7% premium to the Pushpay share price prior to its trading halt and a 30.1% premium to where its shares were trading before its first takeover offer was received.

After a promising start to Wednesday's trade, the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) handed back its gains to slump lower. The index closed 0.53% lower at 6,462 points.

It followed another rough session on Wall Street. After falling into a bear market on Monday (Tuesday AEDT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) posted a 0.4% fall overnight. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 Index (SP: .INX) slumped 0.2% to its lowest close since November 2020.

Interestingly, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) dodged the suffering to gain 0.2%.

But that wasn't enough to save the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) from posting the biggest fall today. The tech sector slipped 1.6% on Wednesday.

Meanwhile the S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Staples Index (ASX: XSJ) slumped 0.4% and the S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Index (ASX: XDJ) dumped 1% amid the latest Australian retail figures.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics found Aussies upped their spending another 0.6% in August, as food retailing climbed and most other retailing fell.

At the end of the day, only two ASX 200 sectors were trading in the green. But which shares outperformed? Let's take a look.

It joined many of its ASX 200 coal producing peers in the green.

The benchmark index also welcomed eight others.

The shakeup was part of the S&P Dow Jones Indices quarterly rebalance, which seeks to maintain risks at targeted volatility levels.

The ASX 200 houses the 200 (or so) largest listed companies by market cap. As some of these companies lost a lot of ground over the past three months, they were replaced by other companies.

Below we look at the eight companies that departed the ASX 200 on Monday and how they've performed since Friday's closing bell. For context, the benchmark index is down 0.6% this week.

Leaving the ASX 200 on Monday

The first company to depart the benchmark index is Life360 Inc (ASX: 360), with a market cap of $1.0 billion. Based in the United States, the software development company allows users to keep track of family members via its apps. The Life360 share price is down 1.3% since Friday's closing bell.

Up next is AVZ Minerals Ltd (ASX: AVZ), which has a market cap of $2.7 billion. The resource explorer is focused on developing the lithium-rich Manono Project, located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. AVZ shares last traded on 6 May, after which the company asked for a halt in trading. And it now looks like shares won't be trading again until at least October.

The third company that got kicked out of the ASX 200 on Monday is City Chic Collective Ltd (ASX: CCX), with a market cap of $377 million. The ASX retailer specialises in plus-size women's apparel, footwear and accessories. City Chic pays a 0.6% trailing dividend yield, fully franked. Shares are down 5.9% this week.

Moving on to the fourth company to exit the benchmark index, we have Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX: CUV), with a market cap of $944 million. The biotech share is engaged in developing drugs for the treatment of genetic and vascular disorders. Clinuvel pays a slender 0.2% trailing dividend yield, fully franked. The share price is down 10.5% since Friday's closing bell.

Also exiting the benchmark index

Fintech company EML Payments Ltd (ASX: EML) also departed the ASX 200 on Monday. EML payments has a market cap of $330 million. Shares are down 6.95% this week.

Next, we have Janus Henderson Group PLC (ASX: JHG), which has a market cap of $5.9 billion. The investment management services company pays a 6.2%, unfranked trailing dividend yield. The Janus Henderson share price has slipped 1.9% this week.

Coming in at number seven is Pointsbet Holdings Ltd (ASX: PBH), with a market cap of $641 million. Pointsbet, as the name implies, is a licensed corporate bookmaker with operations in Australia and the United States. The Pointsbet share price is down 2.8% since Friday's closing bell.

And the final company to exit the ASX 200 on Monday is Zip Co Ltd (ASX: ZIP). The buy now, pay later (BNPL) stock has been particularly hard hit by rising interest rates this year, leaving it with a current market cap of $535 million. The Zip share price is down 10.9% this week.

In afternoon trade, the benchmark index is up 1.2% to 6,799.7 points.

Four ASX shares that have failed to follow the market higher today are listed below. Here's why they are dropping:

Accent Group Ltd (ASX: AX1)

The Accent share price is down 5% to $1.27. This is despite there being no news out of the footwear focused retailer on Tuesday. This latest decline means the Accent share price is now down by a disappointing 49% since the start of the year. Investors appear concerned what impact a recession could have on its sales.

Bigtincan Holdings Ltd (ASX: BTH)

The Bigtincan share price is down over 4% to 55.5 cents. Investors have been selling this sales enablement software platform provider's shares despite the release of a positive business update. That update reveals that Bigtincan has successfully locked in 43% of FY 2022's annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $120.1 million through to the end of FY 2023. This compares to 31% at a similar stage a year earlier.

Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV)

The Clinuvel share price has continued its slide and is down 3% to $19.37. Investors have been selling this biopharmaceutical company's shares this week after they were dumped out of the ASX 200 index at the quarterly rebalance. The release of its latest strategy update has also failed to get investors excited.

IVE Group Ltd (ASX: IGL)

The IVE share price is down 4% to $2.29. This morning this printing company announced the completion of an institutional placement. IVE has raised $18 million via the issue of 8 million shares at $2.25 per new share. The capital raising will preserve significant balance sheet capacity for IVE following a recent acquisition. This balance sheet strength will be used to pursue previously announced growth initiatives including further organic initiatives or acquisitions.

At the time of writing the benchmark index is down 0.1% to 6,733.2 points.

Four ASX shares that are falling more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are dropping:

Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV)

The Clinuvel share price is down 7% to $19.87. This morning this biopharmaceutical company's shares were dumped out of the ASX 200 index at the quarterly rebalance. In other news, the company released its latest strategy update. But that clearly hasn't been enough to boost its shares today.

EML Payments Ltd (ASX: EML)

The EML share price is down almost 4% to 90 cents. This embattled payments company's shares were also kicked out of the ASX 200 index this morning following the quarterly rebalance. With its shares down over 70% this year, the company's market capitalisation has dropped to just over $330 million. This wasn't enough to make it a top 200 company.

Infomedia Limited (ASX: IFM)

The Infomedia share price is down 4.5% to $1.30. This morning the software provider to the automotive industry revealed that after 13 weeks of discussions, the TA Consortium has been unable to develop and submit a binding takeover offer. The consortium previously tabled a non-binding $1.70 cents per share offer.

Link Administration Holdings Ltd (ASX: LNK)

The Link share price is down 2.5% to $3.38. This has also been driven by a takeover update. On this occasion, the administration services provider announced this morning that it has rejected a revised takeover offer from Dye & Durham. The suitor revised its offer after coming to the view that it cannot accept conditions set by the UK regulator to complete the deal as it was.

Not because anything too remarkable is happening with the index's movements themselves this Monday. At the time of writing, the ASX 200 is essentially flat, having gained an unremarkable 0.04% so far this session to just over 6,740 points.

No, it's a big day for the ASX 200 today because the latest quarterly rebalancing has just taken effect. The ASX 200 has just had a shakeup.

Why do indexes need rebalancing?

Like most indexes, the ASX 200 is constructed through weighting by market capitalisation. This means the largest companies by size enjoy the largest weighting in the index.

So even though there are 200 or so ASX shares in the ASX 200, the largest ones have more influence than the smallest ones. So Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA), for example, has a far more influential presence on the ASX 200 than, say, Bank of Queensland Limited (ASX: BOQ).

But market capitalisations are determined by a company's sales price. And, as we know, this changes every trading day. As such, the largest ASX 200 shares by market capitalisation are always in flux.

To make up for this, the ASX 200 is rebalanced every three months to ensure the index is accurately representing the Australian share market. What might have been the ASX 200's 195th largest share by market cap in one quarter might become the 205th, for example, by the time the next quarter rolls around.

As such, there are normally new companies that leave the index when this rebalancing takes place. These will be replaced by others that have seen their market capitalisation rise over the quarter in question.

So these changes to the ASX 200 Index are normally announced with a few weeks to spare. This gives index funds and other concerned parties the time to adjust and hopefully prevents no unnecessarily wild price swings on the rebalance day.

We found out what the latest rebalancing would involve a few weeks ago on 2 September. But today is the day these changes take effect. So let's go over some of the biggest changes to the ASX 200 Index that are in place from today.

A new look ASX 200

So, to get the bad news out of the way first, here is a list of the ASX 200 shares that are, well, no longer ASX 200 shares.:

Life360 Inc (ASX: 360)

Janus Henderson Group (ASX: JHG)

Pointsbet Holdings Ltd (ASX PBH)

Zip Co Ltd (ASX: ZIP)

In their place, here are the new faces that have just gained an ASX 200 membership card:

Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM)

Charter Hall Social Infrastructure REIT (ASX: CQE)

Johns Lyng Group Ltd (ASX: JLG)

Karoon Energy Ltd (ASX: KAR)

Lovisa Holdings Ltd (ASX: LOV)

Smartgroup Corporation Ltd (ASX: SIQ)

Spark New Zealand Ltd (ASX: SPK)

Sayona Mining Ltd (ASX: SYA)

So some interesting names here, which perhaps some readers might be familiar with.

ASX 200 membership can be a big deal for a company's shares. For example, as of today, any ASX 200 index fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the ASX 200 will have now sold any of the companies in our first list. They also would have just welcomed all of the companies in our second list in their funds.

There's also the prestige that comes along with being in the flagship index of ASX 200 shares.

So today might be a bitter day for some ASX shares that didn't make the cut this time. But it will also be a happy day for the new companies being welcomed onto the ASX 200 as of this Monday.

This is the day that additions and removals from major indices to reflect changes in market capitalisations and liquidity are made effective.

Earlier this month S&P Dow Jones Indices announced a sizeable eight additions and eight removals from the benchmark ASX 200 index.

For the companies entering the index, it often gives their shares a boost. That's because index funds have to buy them to reflect the change and fund managers that are only allowed to buy ASX 200 shares now have the option to invest.

Conversely, the shares that are kicked out of the ASX 200 index can come under pressure from selling from index funds and fund managers dumping shares they are no longer able to hold due to strict investment mandates.

And while most of the buying and selling is likely to be done in the two weeks between the announcement and the rebalance becoming effective, it is always interesting to see how these shares perform on rebalance day.

How are the ASX 200 evictees performing?

Let's take a look at how the eight ASX shares that have been kicked out of the ASX 200 today are performing. Here's a summary:

The AVZ Minerals Ltd (ASX: AVZ) share price has been suspended for over four months and thus has not been impacted (yet) by this rebalance.

The City Chic Collective Ltd (ASX: CCX) share price is down 4% to $1.62 on Monday. This plus sized fashion retailer's shares are now trading close to a 52-week low.

The Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV) share price has dropped 5% to $20.32 today.

The EML Payments Ltd (ASX: EML) share price has tumbled 4% to 90 cents. This struggling payments company's shares are now down over 70% in 2022.

The Janus Henderson Group (ASX: JHG) share price is down 0.5% today.

The Life360 Inc (ASX: 360) share price is defying the trend and storming 6% higher to $5.64 this afternoon.

The Pointsbet Holdings Ltd (ASX: PBH) share price is also managing to push higher despite its ASX 200 exit. The sports betting company's shares are up 2% to $2.14.

The Zip Co Ltd (ASX: ZIP) share price is down 2% to 80.5 cents. This buy now pay later provider's shares are now down 81% in 2022.

It tumbled 0.75% amid seemingly dire news of Ramsay Health Care Limited (ASX: RHC)'s takeover talks.

Meanwhile, the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) fell 0.3%. It was weighed down by the Link Administration Holdings Ltd (ASX: LNK) share price, which tumbled 20% on more disappointing takeover-related news.

All in all, nine of the index's 11 sectors closed in the green today. But which share outperformed all others? Keep reading to find out.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) started the week off with a bang, driven higher by miners and tech shares. The index lifted 1.02% to close at 6,964.50 points on Monday.

The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) closed today's session 2.2% higher, likely on the back of rising commodities.

Iron ore futures lifted 2.1% to US$102.23 a tonne on Friday while gold futures rose 0.5% to US$1,728 an ounce. Nickel also posted a 5.7% gain to finish Friday trading at U$22,959 a tonne.

Meanwhile, the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) surged 1.5% today.

Its gains were likely due to a similarly strong Friday on Wall Street. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) gained 2.1% on Friday.

But it wasn't all green across the market today. The S&P/ASX 200 Health Care Index (ASX: XHJ) was alone in posting a loss on Monday. It fell 0.3%.

But which ASX 200 share recorded the best start to the week? Keep reading to find out.

The materials stock posted a 6.7% gain after the company released an update on its Hengjaya Mine.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) bounced back from Wednesday's seven-week low today. The index closed 1.77% higher at 6,848.70 points.

It followed a strong session on Wall Street that saw the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) break a seven-session losing streak to gain 2.1%.

It might not surprise readers then that the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) led the market's gains today, rising 3.2%.

Meanwhile, lithium shares led the S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ)'s 2.7% gain while the S&P/ASX Real Estate Index (ASX: XRE) lifted 2.9%.

But it wasn't a great day for all ASX 200 sectors. The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) tumbled 2.8% following a disastrous night for oil prices.

The Brent crude oil price fell 5.2% to a new seven-month low of US$88 overnight. Meanwhile, the US Nymex crude oil price dropped 5.7% to trade at US$81.94 a barrel – its lowest point since January.

All in all, 10 of the ASX 200's 11 sectors closed higher on Thursday. But which share outperformed all others to take today's crown? Keep reading to find out.

Outstanding company performance and favourable economic conditions are obviously fantastic for ASX shares.

But occasionally stocks might get a nice boost from an unexpected circumstance.

That's exactly the great fortune Johns Lyng Group Ltd (ASX: JLG), Sayona Mining Ltd (ASX: SYA), and Lovisa Holdings Ltd (ASX: LOV) investors find themselves in this month.

That's because those three ASX shares have been named as new additions to the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO).

They will be welcomed into the flagship index before trading begins on Monday 19 September.

Not just prestige, but actual practical ramifications

So why is joining the ASX 200 such a boon for stocks?

That's because passive funds that follow the index are forced to buy the shares, thereby pushing up demand.

And of course, the share price heads upward as demand increases.

This will be some relief for investors of insurance building repairer Johns Lyng. The price for that stock has dipped 15.5% over the last couple of weeks.

Shareholders for lithium producer Sayona Mining will be glad too, with that stock losing about a third of its value since 19 April.

Lovisa shares have gained a whopping 71% since mid-June, so the ASX 200 addition could light another fire under the rocket.

More to watch

Those three stocks aren't the only ones entering the exclusive 200 club though.

Investors may keep an eye on these other companies to see how they might move as 19 September approaches:

Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM)

Charter Hall Social Infrastructure REIT (ASX: CQE)

Karoon Energy Ltd (ASX: KAR)

Smartgroup Corporation Ltd (ASX: SIQ)

Spark New Zealand Ltd (ASX: SPK)

Conversely, for each stock that's added to the ASX 200, one gets removed.

And that's potentially bad news for those companies, as passive funds that follow the index are forced to sell.

When supply increases, the share price dips.

So watch out if you're holding any of these ASX shares, which will be kicked out of the ASX 200 on the morning of 19 September:

Life360 Inc (ASX: 360)

AVZ Minerals Limited (ASX: AVZ)

City Chic Collective Ltd (ASX: CCX)

Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV)

EML Payments Ltd (ASX: EML)

Janus Henderson Group CDI (ASX: JHG)

Pointsbet Holdings Ltd (ASX: PBH)

Zip Co Ltd (ASX: ZIP)

Iron ore futures tumbled 8% overnight to US$96.39 a tonne. Meanwhile, base metals fell as much as 7.6%.

In more positive news, the S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ) lifted 0.7% despite a notable announcement from AMP Ltd (ASX: AMP).

The All Ordinaries Index (ASX: XAO) is limping towards the weekend, wobbling in and out of the green on Friday. But while the index struggles to gain traction, some ASX All Ords shares are posting notable gains.

Right now, the All Ords is down 0.04%. Meanwhile, its top performing constituents are boasting gains as high as 11.3%.

Let's take a look at some of the All Ords shares outperforming on Friday.

These All Ords shares are defying the ASX's downturn

It's been a rough week on the market. Indeed, the benchmark index is on track to finish the week 3.7% lower than it closed last week's trade. But it's not all doom and gloom. Plenty of All Ords shares are boasting notable gains on Friday.

The index is currently being led by three shares, each operating in vastly different spaces.

Oil and gas explorer Carnarvon Energy Ltd (ASX: CVN) is in the lead, posting a 11.3% gain to trade at 16.7 cents. It's joined in the All Ords top three performers by minerals explorer and developer 5E Advanced Materials Inc (ASX: 5EA) – up 7.5% to $2.28 – despite the prices of both oil and major commodities falling overnight.

The Cettire Ltd (ASX: CTT) share price is also posting a decent performance, lifting 7.9% to trade at 75 cents. That's despite no news having been released by the online luxury goods retailer.

Many larger ASX All Ords shares are also putting on a strong performance today.

The Macquarie Group Ltd (ASX: MQG) share price, for one, is lifting 2% right now. Meanwhile, shares in Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV) are up 3.9%.

Finally, tech favourite and ASX constituent Life360 Inc (ASX: 360) is also well and truly in the green, having lifted 6.4% at the time of writing.

At market close, the All Ords had slipped by 0.06% to 7,226.1 points. But that doesn't mean all All Ords shares are following suit.

So let's check out three ASX All Ords shares that had had a cracker of a day today, each rising over 10% at one point.

3 All Ords shares that leapt over 10%

Webjet Limited (ASX: WEB)

ASX travel share Webjet is our first All Ords company to take stock of today. Webjet shares finished up a healthy 8.02% at $5.52 each. But the travel company rose as high as $5.70 after lunchtime, a gain worth more than 11% at the time.

This seems to be a response to the trading update the company put out this morning alongside its annual general meeting. This informed investors that Webjet has had a great and profitable start to FY23.

The company expects cash flow to exceed $100 million over the first half of the financial year. Investors have obviously liked what they heard there.

Tyro Payments Ltd (ASX: TYR)

Tyro Payments is another ASX All Ords share that had a day to remember this Wednesday. At the close, the Tyro share price finished 11.93% higher at $1.22 after climbing as high as $1.23 this morning.

In this case, it seems investors are continuing to flood into Tyro shares following the company's full-year earnings for FY22 that were delivered on Monday.

Tyro announced a 34% rise in payments statutory gross profit to $147.7 million. But it also reported a statutory loss after tax of $29.6 million, slightly down from the $29.8 million loss of FY21. Even so, investors seem to approve, with Tyro shares now up almost 20% this week.

Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV)

Finally today we have All Ords pharma company Clinuvel. Clinuvel shares gained an impressive 16.19% to $20.17 at market close today. Earlier, the Clinuvel share price reached as high as $20.43.

This company also delivered its FY22 numbers yesterday. But the reaction at the time was far more muted than the gains we saw today. Perhaps the investor webinar that was released to investors this morning got some more blood flowing.

This highlighted Clinuvel's 37% rise in revenues, the 33% increase in net profit before tax to $34.2 million and the 60% spike in the annual dividend to 4 cents per share. Investors evidently liked what the company had to say.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) put out a wobbly performance on Wednesday, opening and closing in the red despite gaining for much of the session. The index closed 0.16% lower at 6,986.80 points.

Sadly, today marks the unofficial end of earnings season. While the month of August always brings a rollercoaster of emotions for ASX investors, we'll be sad to see it go.

As always, readers can catch up on all this season's major earnings here.

The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) weighed on the market today, closing 2.9% lower, likely on the back of falling energy commodities.

The Brent crude oil price fell 5.5% to US$99.31 a barrel overnight while the US Nymex crude oil price tumbled 5.5% to US$91.64 a barrel. To top it off, the price of thermal coal slipped 1.9% to US$414.55.

On the other end of the market, the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) posted a 1.7% gain today. Despite lifting for a second consecutive day, it still hasn't recovered its Monday losses.

Five of the ASX 200's 11 sectors were in the green at the end of Wednesday's trade. But which share outperformed all others? Keep reading to find out.

The Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV) share price gained 16% today after the company released a strong set of results for FY22.

Shares in the ASX-biotech company went into overdrive today, finishing 16.19% higher at $20.17 a share after hitting an intraday high of $20.43 each.

Let's see what all the fuss was about.

What did Clinuvel report for FY22?

Here is a brief snapshot of the key highlights from the company's FY22 results.

Revenue jumped 37% to $65.7 million

Profit before income tax rose 33% to $34.3 million

Net profit after tax (NPAT) went backwards by 16% to $20.9 million

A fully franked final dividend of 4 cents per share was declared

Clinuvel develops drugs for the treatment of genetic and vascular disorders and makes most of its revenue in Europe and the USA. Its core product is SCENESSE, a drug for erythropoietic protoporphyria, an inherited condition that causes acute and painful sensitivity to light.

SCENESSE was the primary revenue driver with its sales increasing 40.8% to $60 million, in particular in the US.

The significant increase in income tax from $0.98 million in FY21 to $13.4 million in FY22 was the main reason for the decline in net profit after tax, the company said.

Personnel-related costs, share-based payments, and materials expenses also contributed to the fall in the bottom line. Share-based payments rose from $2.6 million in FY21 to $6.1 million in FY22.

Operating cash flows jumped from $19.2 million in FY21 to $39.9 million in FY22. After deducting payments for property and plant and equipment, free cash flow improved from $18.4 million in FY21 to $39.4 million in FY22.

The record date for determining entitlements for the final dividend is 7 September. It is due to be paid on 21 September.

What else happened in FY22?

In March, the Clinuvel share price shot up on the back of a positive update on a stroke treatment pilot study, as covered by my colleague James Mickleboro.

The study revealed that Clinuvel's drug had no adverse side effects in stroke patients by day eight over a 42-day study period.

In May, Clinuvel then recorded positive results by the end of the trial where Clinuvel's drug afamelanotide was deemed safe in treating mild to moderate arterial ischaemic stroke.

Such results demonstrate the potential optionality of Clinuvel's treatments, the company said.

What did management say?

Clinuvel's chief financial officer Darren Keamy said:

CLINUVEL's commercial operations are scaling up to meet treatment demand worldwide, while the Group is pursuing R&D projects which aim to add value over the long-term. Our FY2022 results show a fundamentally strong business to date, allowing us to invest for future growth. Improved cash inflows this year have further bolstered the Company's cash reserves enabling us to continue the implementation of a growth strategy in the face of difficult economic headwinds. The strong cash position has also allowed the Board to declare an increase in dividend this year, most of all recognising the loyalty and patience of long-term shareholders. We remain focused to translate our technology to the benefit of patients and specialised populations, particularly those at highest risk of light-induced damage and skin cancer.

Given Clinuvel currently has $121.5 million in cash with no long-term debt, I can see why Keamy is optimistic about the company's future outlook.

What's next for Clinuvel?

Management is planning to reinvest a large chunk of its capital into new development. In FY22, Clinuvel reinvested more than 49% of its revenue in R&D, new specialised staff, and production.

The biopharmaceutical company has committed to spending $175 million over the five years to 30 June 2025 to execute its growth and expansion plans. Management says is on track based on prior expenditure levels in FY21 and FY22.

Clinuvel share price upgraded by broker

Broker Jefferies upgraded its Clinuvel share price target from $31.40 per share to $36.90 per share, maintaining a 'buy' rating. Jefferies sees big market potential for its erythropoietic protoporphyria drug because it believes there are no competitors. However, it also sees increased competition over the medium term.

Clinuvel share price snapshot

The Clinuvel share price has suffered a similar fate as many other ASX growth stocks. The company's shares fell by 47% across the last year but have recorded a 10% rise in just the past week.

Meantime, the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) has been more steady with a fall of 7% over the past year and a drop of 0.16% in the last month.

Clinuvel has a current market capitalisation of around $995 million.

Its current price-to-earnings multiple is around 42.78 times.

S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) shares pushed through another day of big earnings news as the index lifted for a third consecutive day. It closed Tuesday's session 0.58% higher at 7,105.4 points, marking a new nine-week high.

The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) led the way today, gaining 1.7%. Its top-performing constituent was BHP Group Ltd (ASX: BHP) after the iron ore giant posted a US$21.3 billion underlying attributable profit and a US$1.75 final dividend.

The sector's strong performance was made more impressive by the struggling iron ore price. Iron ore futures slipped 2.8% overnight to reach US$106.79 a tonne. Meanwhile, some base metal prices fell as much as 4.5% and gold futures slumped 1% to US$1,798.1 an ounce.

The S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Staples Index (ASX: XSJ) and the S&P/ASX 200 Health Care Index (ASX: XHJ) also outperformed, each gaining 1%.

It wasn't all sunshine on the market today, however. The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) slumped 1%. The Beach Energy Ltd (ASX: BPT) share price struggled for a second consecutive day to close down 3.95%. This is seemingly spurred by the company's full-year results released yesterday.

All in all, nine of the ASX 200's 11 sectors lifted on Tuesday. But which ASX share was the index's top performer? Keep reading to find out.
