This Monday has seen the ASX 200 take a significant hit, with investors shaken by what's happening over on the US markets at the moment with the collapse of the tech-focused bank SVB Financial Group.

At the time of writing, the ASX 200 has lost 0.42% and is trading at around 7,114.9 points.

But one sector today is a rather conspicuous outlier in terms of the market's falls. That would be ASX 200 gold stocks. Gold is one of the top-performing corners of the market right now, with the ten shares experiencing the highest gains on the ASX 200 right now all being gold stocks.

Take the largest ASX 200 gold miner on the market, Newcrest Mining Ltd (ASX: NCM). Right now, Newcrest shares are up a very healthy 3.23% at $24.10 each.

But those gains pale in comparison to some other ASX 200 gold stocks. Take the Northern Star Resources Ltd (ASX: NST) share price. Northern Star shares have rocketed by an impressive 5.4% so far today to $11.13 a share. That pulls Northern Star back to a year-to-date gain in 2023:

But that's just the start of it.

Silver Lake Resources Ltd (ASX: SLR) shares have gained more than 8.3% today. Ramelius Resources Ltd (ASX: RMS) shares are up more than 9%. And Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM) shares have surged more than 15%.

So what's going on with ASX 200 gold stocks today?

Well, it seems to be a response to the price of gold itself. As we flagged this morning, the precious metal surged in value at the end of last week's trading. It has climbed even higher today and is now sitting around US$1,882 per ounce. That's significantly above the US$1,820 levels gold was asking around the middle of last week.

Gold is viewed as a 'safe haven' asset, and is often bought up when investors have concerns about the immediate future of share prices or the health of the financial system.

Considering the collapse of the SVB Financial Group (Silicon Valley Bank) that has rocked the US economy over the past few days, this probably explains why investors are turning to gold right now and away from most other shares on the market.

This benefits the price of gold itself, but also the ASX gold miners that sell it. Not to mention exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that allow investors to get price exposure to the precious metal. As we covered earlier today, this session has seen a few gold ETFs hit new record highs.

So it's probably for this reason that gold, and ASX gold stocks and ETFs, are all shining so brightly this Monday.

The post Why are ASX 200 gold stocks like Northern Star having such a stellar run today? appeared first on The Motley Fool Australia.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) regained some of its Monday losses today, closing 0.47% higher at 7,258.4 points.

Leading the charge were energy stocks, with the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) gaining 1.5% with the Woodside Energy Group Ltd (ASX: WDS) coming in as its best performer.

The energy giant posted its full-year earnings – detailing a US$5 billion profit – yesterday.

The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) also posted a strong session's trading, gaining 1.5% following yesterday's 3.15% tumble.

On the other hand, the S&P/ASX 200 Utilities Index (ASX: XUJ) slumped 1.3% on Tuesday, weighed down by the 1.7% fall in the Origin Energy Ltd (ASX: ORG) share price.

So, with all that in mind, which ASX 200 share outperformed all others to post today's biggest gain? Let's take a look.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) ended this week strong, gaining 0.23% on Friday to close at 7,452.2 points – its highest close since April 2022. That marks a 1.69% week-on-week improvement.

Its gains today came despite yet another disappointing session for New York-listed shares overnight. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) and the S&P 500 Index (SP: .INX) both slipped 0.8% on Thursday's session, while the Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) tumbled 1%.

That didn't stop the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) from posting a 1.4% gain. The sector rose alongside oil prices, which also jumped as much as 1.4% overnight.

Meanwhile, the S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) lifted 0.9%, driven by lithium and coal stocks.

At the time of writing, the ASX 200 has lifted by a healthy 0.98%, putting the index at just under 7,180 points. But let's talk about five ASX 200 mining shares that are doing even better than that.

This Monday has been especially lucrative for a number of big ASX miners.

First up is Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM). This ASX 200 gold miner has enjoyed a 2.17% bump so far today to $5.19.

That's not only a new 52-week high for Capricorn but an all-time, record high. Investors have also enjoyed a pleasing 57% return from Capricorn over the past 12 months.

Another ASX 200 share worth checking out is Gold Road Resources Ltd (ASX: GOR). Gold Road shares are presently up a decent 0.65% to $1.86. But this gold miner hit a new 52-week high of $1.90 a share this morning soon after market open.

That's just a whisker off of Gold Road's all-time high of just over $2 a share that we saw back in mid-2020.

ASX 200 gold shares glitter

De Grey Mining Limited (ASX: DEG) is another ASX 200 gold miner that is on fire this Monday. De Grey shares have gained 1.43% so far today to $1.56 a share.

That's bang on De Grey's new 52-week high and is also close to the highest share price this miner has ever traded at.

Next, we have gold share Perseus Mining Limited (ASX: PRU). This company's rise has been a little more muted, with Perseus shares up 0.86% so far to $2.35 each.

This morning, the company lifted as high as $2.38 a share, which is a new 52-week high for Perseus. Although this isn't a record high, it is the highest share price this company has seen in a decade.

Finally, we have yet another ASX 200 gold miner in Northern Star Resources Ltd (ASX: NST). Northern Star shares have put on a pleasing 1.2% so far this Monday to $11.90 each.

This morning saw a new 52-week high of $11.99 for Northern Star as well, capping off what has been a very pleasing day of trading for ASX 200 gold shares.

So with so many gold shares hitting new highs, you might think there is an underlying factor at play here. Well, you'd be right. As my Fool colleague James covered this morning, the price of gold jumped a substantial 1.6% at the end of last week to US$1,869.70 per ounce.

Thus, we can probably thank this jump for the boom we have seen in these five ASX 200 gold shares this Monday.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) recovered from Tuesday's fall today, lifting 1.63% to close at 7,059.2 points.

Its gains came despite a rough night's trade on Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) traded flat on Tuesday overseas while the S&P 500 Index (SP: .INX) fell 0.4% and the Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) dropped 0.8%.

Interestingly, the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) led the way today. It rose 2.9%.

And the tech sector wasn't alone in posting a whopper gain. The S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ) also lifted 2.2% while the S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Index (ASX: XDJ) jumped 2.1%.

It wasn't such a good day for energy stocks, however. The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) fell 1.3% after the price of oil slid 4% amid concerns about Chinese demand and a stronger US dollar, Reuters reports.

So, with all that in mind, let's take a look at today's top-performing ASX 200 shares.

The 2022 year was a mixed one for ASX 200 gold shares, but three shares were standout performers.

The Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM), Perseus Mining Limited (ASX: PRU) and Northern Star Resources Ltd (ASX: NST) share prices all soared in 2022. In this piece, we are looking at three shares with a market capitalisation of more than $100 million that are part of the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO).

Let's take a look at these three ASX 200 gold shares in more detail.

Capricorn Metals

Capricorn Metals shares soared by 35.3% in 2022. The company is developing the Karlawinda Gold Project and the Mount Gibson Gold Project in Western Australia.

Capricorn Metals shares exploded by 78% between market close on 26 September and 30 December. Gold futures rose 12% from US$1633.40 an ounce at market close on 26 September to US$1830.10 on 30 December, CNBC data shows.

In late October, Capricorn advised ore reserves at the Karlawinda project had lifted 12% to 1.34 million ounces. Capricorn shares leapt nearly 5% on this day. Meanwhile, on 7 November Capricorn announced the Mineral Resource Estimate at the Mt Gibson project had soared by 32% from 2,755,000 ounces. Capricorn shares soared 10% on this day alone.

Commenting on this news, executive chairman Mark Clark said:

Our exploration team has made a strong start to FY23, advancing some exciting early-stage prospects across our global tier-1 portfolio as well as expanding beyond known areas of mineralisation.

Perseus Mining

The Perseus share price surged by 30.2% in 2022. Perseus operates three gold mines in Africa. Perseus shares had a bumper end to the year, soaring 57% between market close on 26 September and 30 December amid higher gold prices.

In October, Perseus advised of a maiden ore reserve of 2.2 Mt 3.58 grams per tonne for 259koz at the Yaouré Gold Mine in Côte d'Ivoire. Commenting on the news, Perseus managing director and CEO Jeff Quartermaine said:

Having attained the goal of producing gold at a rate of 500,000oz per year across our three gold mines, we are now working to maintain, and where possible, exceed that level of production over the next decade and beyond.

Northern Star

Northern Star shares leapt by 15.9% in 2022. The company has a market capitalisation of nearly $13 billion. Northern Star outperformed ASX gold giant Newcrest, which fell 15% during the calendar year.

Like Perseus and Capricorn, Northern Star shares soared nearly 57% between market close on 26 September and 30 December. The higher gold price likely helped Northern Star recover losses in the first nine months of the year.

On 15 November, Northern Star provided an exploration update. The company advised of progress on its FY23 exploration program. Managing director Stuart Tonkin said:

Our exploration team has made a strong start to FY23, advancing some exciting early-stage prospects across our global tier-1 portfolio as well as expanding beyond known areas of mineralisation.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) was driven higher by mining shares on Monday. The index gained 0.6% to close at 6,933.7 points.

The iron ore price has also had a green run, as my Fool colleague Bernd reports.
Iron ore futures lifted 2.1% to US$85.16 a tonne on Friday. At the same time, gold futures lifted 2.8% to US$1,676.70.

At the time of writing, the benchmark index is up 0.45% to 6,923.1 points.

Four ASX shares that are climbing more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are rising:

Arafura Rare Earths Ltd (ASX: ARU)

The Arafura Rare Earths share price is up 12% to 34.2 cents. This morning this rare earths developer announced offtake agreements with automakers Hyundai and Kia. The company will supply the two with up to 1,500 tonnes of neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) annually from its Nolans Project. The agreement is on a seven-year term, with the potential for a five-year extension.

BHP Group Ltd (ASX: BHP)

The BHP share price is up almost 5% to $40.41. Investors have been buying BHP and other mining shares after commodity prices stormed higher on Friday. This was driven by speculation that China could end its COVID zero policy. Unfortunately, Chinese authorities have since quashed this speculation but that hasn't stopped BHP's shares from rising.

Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM)

The Capricorn Metals share price is up 10% to $3.84. This follows an announcement by the gold explorer relating to its Mt Gibson Gold Project (MGGP) in Western Australia. According to the release, the company has increased its mineral resource estimate at MGGP by 32% to 2,755,000 ounces. Management also sees opportunities to increase its mineral resource further.

Newcrest Mining Ltd (ASX: NCM)

The Newcrest share price is up 4% to $18.09. Investors have been buying Newcrest and other gold miners on Monday after a strong night for the precious metal on Friday. This has led to the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Gold index rising a sizeable 4.7% this afternoon.

Certainly a decent start to the week.

But this newly minted ASX 200 share is leaving the benchmark returns in the dust today.

The company in question is mineral explorer Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM), up 9.9% in late morning trade.

The miner listed on the ASX back on 7 July 2008. But it wasn't until 19 September this year that Capricorn Metals joined the ASX 200.

So, why are Capricorn Metals shares rocketing today?

Why are Capricorn Metals shares flying higher?

The ASX 200 mining share has grabbed investor attention after reporting a major Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) boost at its Mt Gibson Gold Project (MGGP) in Western Australia.

Capricorn Metals said the MRE had increased by 32% to 2,755,000 ounces, up from the prior 2,083,000-ounce estimate.

The new MRE includes 2,106,000 ounces in the Indicated category, which the miner said provides "a very strong basis" for its maiden Ore Reserve Estimate. That Ore Estimate is expected sometime during this current quarter.

The ASX 200 miner has now completed in excess of 104,000 metres of reverse circulation (RC) drilling and the accompanying assays at the project since January.

Investor interest could also be spurred by the shallow depth, with average vertical depth of 160 metres. The miner said this suggests that additional drilling should present new opportunities to increase its resources at the gold project.

Commenting on the results sending the Capricorn Metals share price shooting higher today, executive chairman Mark Clark said:

The increase in the Mt Gibson gold resource to 2.8 million ounces is a fantastic validation of the quality of the project we acquired just over a year ago. With 2.1 million ounces well drilled and in Indicated category we have a really strong base from which to estimate a maiden reserve and move towards development of Capricorn's second gold mining operation in Western Australia.

The shallow average depth of the resource also gives us confidence that the project will continue to grow with further drilling.

How has this new ASX 200 share been tracking longer-term?

You're unlikely to find any investors who bought shares in the newly minted ASX 200 mining share five years ago complaining.

Over that time the Capricorn Metals share price has soared 1,377%. For some context, the ASX 200 is up 15% over this same period.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) posted its best performance in more than two years on Tuesday. The index closed 3.75% higher at 6,699.30 points.

The gain came amid news that the Reserve Bank of Australia hiked interest rates by 0.25% in October – just half of what many market participants were expecting. It's the sixth consecutive month in which the official cash rate has been raised. It now sits at 2.6%.

The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) led the gains, posting a 4.6% increase. The mining sector was likely boosted by new forecasts from the federal government tipping commodity exports to hit another record high this fiscal year amid rocketing lithium prices.

On that note, the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) lifted 3.9% on Tuesday after the government tipped demand for coal to continue while oil prices took off.

The Brent crude oil price gained 4.4% to US$88.86 a barrel on Monday while the US Nymex crude oil price rocketed 5.2% to US$83.63 a barrel.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) dumped most of Thursday's gains today. The index closed 1.23% lower at 6,474.20 points.

That saw it posting a 1.53% week-on-week tumble and a 7.34% fall for the month of September.

Today's suffering followed a rough session overseas. The S&P 500 Index (SP: .INX) fell 2.1% to a two year low on Thursday while the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) slipped 2% and the Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) dumped 2.8%.

It might come as no surprise, then, that the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) led today's downfall. The tech sector plunged 2.6% to its lowest point since July on Friday.

Meanwhile, the S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ) dropped 2.3% ahead of an expected rate hike next week.

Both the S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) and the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) closed in the green, gaining 0.7% and 0.1% respectively.

At the time of writing, the index is down a disappointing 1.25% to 6,676.5 points.

Fortunately, it's not all bad news for All Ords shares today. Listed below are some big winners:

Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM)

The Capricorn Metals share price is up 6.5% to $2.94 on Friday afternoon. This has been driven partly by a bullish broker note out of Macquarie this morning. According to the note, its analysts have upgraded the gold miner's shares to an outperform rating with a $3.30 price target. Although Capricorn Metals' full year results fell short of Macquarie's expectations, it feels its shares are trading at an attractive level and has upgraded its rating accordingly.

Qualitas Ltd (ASX: QAL)

The Qualitas share price is up 8% to $2.33. This has been driven by news that the alternative real estate investment manager has secured another big capital commitment from a global institutional investor. According to the release, the unnamed investor has committed $440 million to the Qualitas Construction Debt Fund II. This means that within the first three months of FY 2023, the company has raised a total of $1.19 billion in new capital. This followed a major investment from the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority investment last month.

Westgold Resources Ltd (ASX: WGX)

The Westgold Resources share price is up almost 6% to 83.5 cents. Investors have been buying Westgold Resources and other All Ords gold miners on Friday despite the gold price only rising modestly during Asian trade. It could be that investors are looking for safe haven options after the market volatility returned. In afternoon trade, the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Gold index is up a pleasing 2.8%.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) welcomed eight new companies on Monday morning.

The benchmark index also farewelled eight others.

That's all part of the S&P Dow Jones Indices quarterly rebalance, following on from its September quarterly review, which seeks to maintain risks at targeted volatility levels.

The ASX 200, as you're likely aware, is home to the 200 (or so) largest listed companies by market cap. As some of these companies lost a lot of ground over the past three months they were replaced, on Monday, by other companies.

Below we look at the eight newest ASX 200 shares and how they've done since the closing bell last Friday. For context, the benchmark index is down 0.6% since then.

Joining the ASX 200 on Monday

The first new company to join the ASX 200 on Monday is Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM), with a market cap of $1.07 billion. The resource explorer's main focus is its Karlawinda Gold Project, located in Western Australia. The Capricorn Metals share price is down 1.05% since being added to its new benchmark index.

Next up we have Charter Hall Social Infrastructure REIT (ASX: CQE), with a market cap of $1.3 billion. The real estate investment trust primarily invests in early learning centres. Charter Hall pays a 4.94% trailing dividend yield, unfranked. The REIT's share price is down 2.6% since Friday's close.

The third company joining the ASX 200 this week is Johns Lyng Group Ltd (ASX: JLG), which has a market cap of $1.64 billion. Johns Lyng provides integrated building services in Australia. The company pays a 0.9% trailing dividend yield, fully franked. Shares are up 2.97% so far this week.

Moving on to the fourth new entrant, we have Karoon Energy Ltd (ASX: KAR), with a market cap of $1.16 billion. The oil and gas exploration and production company has projects in Australia and Brazil. The Karoon Energy share price has gained 3.48% since Friday's close.

Also making the move

Also joining the ASX 200 this week is fashion jewellery retailer Lovisa Holdings Ltd (ASX: LOV). Lovisa has been powering higher in 2022 and now commands a market cap of $2.5 billion. Lovisa pays a 3.26% trailing dividend yield, partly franked. Shares are up 1.8% this week.

Next up is Smartgroup Corporation Ltd (ASX: SIQ), with a market cap of $723 million. The ASX tech share provides specialist employee management services like salary packaging and vehicle fleet management. The stock pays a 6.67% trailing dividend yield, fully franked.
Coming in at number seven is Spark New Zealand Ltd (ASX: SPK), with a hefty market cap of $8.53 billion. The ASX telecom share is a leading provider of fixed line and mobile services in New Zealand. Shares are up 1.79% from where they were at Friday's closing bell. Spark pays a 5.58% trailing dividend yield, unfranked.

And the final company to join the ASX 200 on Monday is Sayona Mining Ltd (ASX: SYA), which has a market cap of $2.2 billion. Shares have tumbled 13.8% this week.

Eagle-eyed market watchers might have noticed a distinct change to the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) this morning.

There are eight new faces on the index after the latest quarterly rebalance took effect prior to the market's open.

Generally, being added to the ASX 200 boosts a company's share price as funds tracking the index are forced to snap up its stock. However, it's likely that most of that action has been completed by now.

Let's take a look at how the newbies are settling in among many of the market's iconic names.

After kicking the day off in the green, the ASX 200 is down 0.16% right now.

How are the ASX 200 newbies performing?

Eight companies found themselves added to the ASX 200 this morning after S&P Dow Jones Indices' September rebalance came into effect.

And leading the pack of newcomers is John Lyng Group Ltd (ASX: JLG). Shares in the building services company have gained 1.8% to trade at $6.17 at the time of writing.

Coming in second best are shares in New Zealand telco Spark New Zealand Ltd (ASX: SPK). The Spark share price has lifted 1% to $4.525 right now.

Also trading higher are ASX 200 newbies Lovisa Holdings Ltd (ASX: LOV) and Charter Hall Social Infrastructure REIT (ASX: CQE). They've both gained 1% to trade at $22.75 and $3.495 respectively.

Meanwhile, shares of Karoon Energy Ltd (ASX: KAR) have lifted 0.2% to $2.015 while Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM) stock is up 0.3% at $2.88.

Sadly, not all shares are celebrating their addition to the index today.

Stock in Smartgroup Corporation Ltd (ASX: SIQ) has fallen 0.5% to trade at $5.395.

But the greatest suffering is being felt by the newly-crowned ASX 200 lithium share.

The share price of emerging lithium producer Sayona Mining Ltd (ASX: SYA) is tumbling 7.9% to 26.7 cents despite the company's silence.

Not because anything too remarkable is happening with the index's movements themselves this Monday. At the time of writing, the ASX 200 is essentially flat, having gained an unremarkable 0.04% so far this session to just over 6,740 points.

No, it's a big day for the ASX 200 today because the latest quarterly rebalancing has just taken effect. The ASX 200 has just had a shakeup.

Why do indexes need rebalancing?

Like most indexes, the ASX 200 is constructed through weighting by market capitalisation. This means the largest companies by size enjoy the largest weighting in the index.

So even though there are 200 or so ASX shares in the ASX 200, the largest ones have more influence than the smallest ones. So Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA), for example, has a far more influential presence on the ASX 200 than, say, Bank of Queensland Limited (ASX: BOQ).

But market capitalisations are determined by a company's sales price. And, as we know, this changes every trading day. As such, the largest ASX 200 shares by market capitalisation are always in flux.

To make up for this, the ASX 200 is rebalanced every three months to ensure the index is accurately representing the Australian share market. What might have been the ASX 200's 195th largest share by market cap in one quarter might become the 205th, for example, by the time the next quarter rolls around.

As such, there are normally new companies that leave the index when this rebalancing takes place. These will be replaced by others that have seen their market capitalisation rise over the quarter in question.

So these changes to the ASX 200 Index are normally announced with a few weeks to spare. This gives index funds and other concerned parties the time to adjust and hopefully prevents no unnecessarily wild price swings on the rebalance day.

We found out what the latest rebalancing would involve a few weeks ago on 2 September. But today is the day these changes take effect. So let's go over some of the biggest changes to the ASX 200 Index that are in place from today.

A new look ASX 200

So, to get the bad news out of the way first, here is a list of the ASX 200 shares that are, well, no longer ASX 200 shares.:
